October 23-27
Hi Families!
5th Graders have been continuing to work hard. It has been a busy week at school! Next week Ann Poeske, our school nurse, will be giving a short presentation on hygiene. A note went home in backpacks today about what will be discussed. Art to Remember order forms went home in backpacks today. If you choose to purchase a product, be sure to return the form by November 3rd.
In literacy, we focused on narrative writing this week. We learned about the writing process; brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing. We learned that good stories include developed characters and setting, as well as a beginning, middle and end. We analyzed strong leads, and practiced writing some of our own. Students are writing a story responding to the prompt: Write a story about a person your age living in either the Maya, Aztec, or Inca civilization. Be sure to include details about the culture’s religion, daily lifestyle, and surrounding environment. Ask your student about his or her narrative!
In social studies we have been learning how to read maps. We have been looking at maps of all types from a variety of locations. We learned about latitude and longitude and many other key features that help us successfully read maps. Students have also been working on their totem poles. The Purple Pineapple’s are a creative bunch!
In science this week, students used our Discovery Education resource to explore the properties of mixtures and solutions. They learned about heterogeneous mixtures, homogeneous mixtures and more specifically, solutions, suspensions and colloids. See if they can give you an example of each! If they can’t, don’t worry, they will continue to work with these next week.
